Accessing Your Super for Dental Treatments

In certain circumstances, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) may allow the early release of superannuation to cover medical or dental treatment costs.

This option may be available when treatment is medically necessary, and the patient is unable to pay through other means.

Applications are assessed individually, and approval is determined by the ATO.

Are You Eligible?

Eligibility for the early release of superannuation is determined by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Some patients may consider applying where:

the dental treatment is necessary to:

  • Relieve pain
  • Treat infection
  • Restore normal function
  • Address dental conditions that are affecting your mental wellbeing

and

  • The cost of treatment cannot reasonably be met through available savings or other financial resources
  • The treatment is supported by appropriate medical or dental documentation

Applications may also include eligible dependants or spouses where the relevant criteria are met.

What Dental Treatment May Be Covered?

Depending on the circumstances and supporting documentation, superannuation may be used to help fund treatments such as:

Purely cosmetic dental treatment is generally not eligible.

How Does the Process Work?

The process is initiated by the patient.

Generally, it involves:

  • 1. Attending a dental consultation and receiving a treatment plan.
  • 2. Obtaining supporting documentation where required.
  • 3. Submitting an application through the ATO via your MyGov account.
  • 4. Awaiting the ATO’s assessment and decision.

Requirements may vary depending on your circumstances.

We Can Provide the Required Dental Documentation

If you're considering applying for the early release of superannuation, we can assess your dental needs and provide a treatment plan and supporting dental documentation required for the application process.

Please note that approval decisions are made by the ATO, not by New Millennium Dental.
